PEONIES (ALBEDO)

In the alchemical tradition, the albedo is the whitening — the purification stage that follows dissolution and precedes gold. It is not the completion of transformation. It is transformation underway: the moment in which what was opaque begins to let light through.

This painting inhabits that moment.

The second major work in the Partnership series, Peonies (Albedo) moves beyond the charged conversation of two distinct natures — the territory of its companion piece, Peonies (Union) — into something less bounded. The petals here overlap and merge so fully that separateness stops being the relevant frame. Two warm centers remain, each the innermost truth of its bloom, but the outer forms have begun to release their edges. Light enters from behind: through small gaps in the petals, along the top and sides of the panel, at every place where boundary softens into luminosity. Not gold applied to the surface, but light already present behind it, made visible as the flowers become transparent.

In feng shui tradition, the partnership area of a home is activated through intention, imagery, and pairs — two forms in conscious relationship. This painting holds all three, while reaching beyond the romantic into something larger: a love that includes but is not limited to any single relationship. It speaks to three kinds of people: someone calling a partnership into their life and creating intentional space for it; a couple wanting to honor and deepen what they already share; and anyone marking a milestone — years that have proven themselves, a commitment renewed, a love that has moved past performance into something steadier.

At five feet wide, this piece is designed to be immersive — not observed from a comfortable distance but entered. It speaks to anyone in the process of opening: to a love that’s steadier than performance, to the reconciliation of inner contradictions, to the understanding that the quality of union available in our external relationships is shaped, first and quietly, by the one we cultivate within ourselves.
