TWILIGHT
A new painting from the Faces of the Mountain series
There’s a moment—neither day nor night, neither waking nor dreaming—when the mountain seems to exhale. The world stills. And something vast and eternal becomes perceptible.
“Twilight” is the newest painting in my Faces of the Mountain series, inspired by the view of Mount Shasta from the road near Castle Lake. I’ve camped in this area many times, waking or falling asleep to this view. And it’s often at twilight—this hushed in-between time—that the landscape reveals its most refined presence.
In the painting, Mt. Shasta emerges in soft focus through atmospheric perspective, anchored by deep blue-greens of the valley beneath. A few pine trees stand in quiet witness in the foreground. The sky above moves from pale golden light to a deep midnight blue, scattered with stars. It is not clear if it is dawn or dusk—only that it is a threshold.
A breath held.
A moment of balance and becoming.

ABOUT THE PAINTING
All materials in this painting were chosen for their archival quality and chemical-free composition, allowing the work to carry and preserve subtle energetic qualities. I use a water-soluble encaustic (wax-based) paint for its depth of color and luminous surface. This medium has a rich history, used in ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian art for its durability and beauty.
To achieve the smooth twilight gradient in the sky, I worked with multiple layers of glazing—building depth, subtle transitions, and the richness of true midnight blue at the top.
Twilight has always invited me into stillness. It is a natural pause. A time when the veils between worlds seem thinner—when insights arise, and the inner landscape becomes more visible. In meditation, this time deepens awareness. When I’m not meditating, I often find myself in quiet reflection.
This painting is both an image and an invocation. It’s a portrait of a sacred moment. A bridge between light and dark, form and formlessness, seen and unseen.
