SPIRIT OF PLACE

The project Spirit of Place is a quest.

  • Exploring the potential of 360/VR immersive experiences for storytelling and education.
  • Document the present state of natural beauty on our planet, in the face an uncertain future due to climate change.
  • Preserve these experiences in a way that allows future generations to see and feel what earth was like at the onset of the 21st century.

The initial goal of this project is to create a series of a minimum of twelve 360 video and sound immersive experiences that can be shared on line, with a minimum of 4 in interactive (walkthrough) format, in a way that captures the essence of the natural environemnts – the Spirit of Place.

I’m excited about 360 video because for the first time creating a 360/VR experience can be somewhat simple & affordable.  I believe that as more and more people explore 360 video that it will open up key concepts for creating powerful VR storytelling and learning experiences.  I also think it will go a long way in popularizing VR.

In mid October 2019 I’ll be setting off on a 4 week camping expedition with my new 360 degree camera and ambisonic mic to capture experiences of beautiful places in California, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico.  I’ll be largely living in my car/tent, which will be an adventure of it’s own.

To test this proof of concept I’ll be shooting with an Insta360 OneX camera and a Zoom H3-VR ambisonic mic with the hopes of upgrading to professional gear as the project progresses.

I’ll be sharing updates, core concepts, and resources on my blog, my creative process via Patreon, and inspirational moments on Instagram. Below are links to follow along and contribute.

I hope that you’ll join me on this adventure!
